Tradition of London is proud to present its Christmas Set for 2020: Garde Grenadiers Full Dress 1804-1815 - The French Army
The Imperial Guard was originally a small group of elite soldiers of the French Army under the direct command of Napoleon I, but grew considerably over time. It acted as his bodyguard and tactical reserve, and he was careful of its use in battle.
The Guard was divided into the staff, infantry, cavalry, and artillery regiments, as well as battalions of sappers and marines.
The guard itself as a whole distinguished between the experienced veterans and less experienced members by being separated into three sections: the Old Guard, Middle Guard and Young Guard.
The figures are made in England of quality white metal and meticulously hand-painted in gloss enamel to the highest standards.

French Infantry, Head of Column, c.1814-15
Officer, Standard-Bearer, 2nd Port-Aigle (Eagle-Escort), 3rd Port-Aigle (Eagle-Escort) Sapeur, and Drummer in Imperial livery c.1814-1815
With the re-introduction of light infantry into the Napoleonic army, they would be combined with a close order column, which would constitute the new tactics of the Napoleonic infantry. The light infantry or skirmishers would occupy the enemy in order for the larger assault formations to move up without being too exposed to the fire of the enemy line. To put this into a clearer perspective, the Napoleonic regular infantry would perform either role, whether it was in a skirmishing or regular infantry role.
Now the roles of the Napoleonic foot soldier has been identified, we can now examine the more renown infantry formations that Napoleon would utilize in his battlefield successes. One such formation was the column, which was developed by Lazare Carnot and later perfected by Napoleon.
The French infantry column was an adaptation of the linear system, where the deployment of a number of linear units or battalions were in depth to provide physical and psychological weight to an attack, however, individual units could still operate in a linear formation. The greatest advantage by using this type of formation would rest in its flexibility and versatility. This formation would permit the commander to move large numbers of troops over the battlefield with better control and more rapidly than was possible before.
The column formation could operate with ease in rough terrain, while being able to change formations just as easily. With the re-introduction of skirmishers, they could be detached without making major readjustments on the battlefield. While on the battlefield, this formation could very rapidly convert from two or three rank firing lines or squares and back to the original formation.

The Black Watch, 42nd Highlanders
The regiment's name allegedly came from the dark tartan that they wore and from its role to "watch" the Highlands. "Black Watch" was originally a nickname for the 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot, but was used more and more so that, in 1881, when the 42nd amalgamated with the 73rd Regiment of Foot, the new regiment was named "The Royal Highland Regiment (The Black Watch)", with The Black Watch becoming the regiment's official designation in 1931. The uniform changed over time, but the nickname has been more enduring. The regimental motto was Nemo me impune lacessit (no man provokes me with impunity).

The Confederate State Army, The American Civil War 1861-1865
General Robert E. Lee, General J.E.B Stuart, Infantry Drummer, Trooper 1st Virginia Cavalry, Private Tiger Zouaves and Artillery Gunner
The Confederate States Army CS Army was the army of the Confederate States of America during its brief existence from 1861 to 1865. It was established in two phases with provisional and permanent organizations, which existed concurrently.BR>
The Provisional Army of the Confederate States PACS was authorized by Act of Congress on February 28, 1861, and began organizing on April 27. Virtually all regular, volunteer, and conscripted men preferred to enter this organization since officers could achieve a higher rank in the Provisional Army than they could in the Regular Army. If the war had ended successfully for them, the Confederates intended that the PACS would be disbanded, leaving only the ACSA. The Army of the Confederate States of America ACSA was the regular army, organized by Act of Congress on March 6, 1861. It was authorized to include 15,015 men, including 744 officers, but this level was never achieved. The men serving in the highest rank as Confederate States Generals, such as Samuel Cooper and Robert E. Lee, were enrolled in the ACSA to ensure that they outranked all militia officers. Members of all the Confederate States military forces, to include the Army, the Navy and the Marine Corps were often referred to as Confederates, and members of the CS Army were referred to as Confederate soldiers. Supplementing the CS Army were the various state militias.

The Roman Army, A General, a Centurion and four Legionaries
All Traditions figure are made in England of quality white metal and meticulously hand painted in gloss enamel paints to the highest standards. Like all soldiers of the ancient world, the Roman soldier was originally the able bodied man of a small community fighting to protect his home and land from jealous neighbours. The organisations of this first army is obscure, but analogy and tradition combine to show that, in order not to disturb the balance of power within the State, it was levied from the noble caste, and commanded by the King. The armour worn, as remains have shown, did not differ much throughout Italy. But types were not yet classified and much experiment was in progress. Offensive weapons were still the cutting sword, carried upon the shoulder strap, and the long trusting spear, both adapted to stand up fighting close quarters. By the early eighth century, the Etruscans were bringing with them to Italy armour of essentially Greek type. Owing to its cost and cumbrousness, this armour never completely ousted the lighter and more pliant Italic type. Yet it created a standard of heavy armoured infantry, which was to last for some time. It quickly became clear, however, that if good armour was the deciding factor in pitched battles, wealth was important as nobility.

The Rearguard The French Army Retreat from Russia 1812
Marshal Ney, an Eagle Bearer, a Chasseur, a Guard Grenadier and two Infantry Privates.
All Traditions figure are made in England of quality white metal and meticulously hand painted in gloss enamel paints to the highest standards. On November 17, Napoleon decided to relieve the pressure on his army by leading his elite guardsmen in a southward attack in the direction of the main body of Russian troops led by Kutusov. Kutusov, not wishing to engage in a general battle with Napoleon, ordered all Russian troops, including those of Miloradovich, to retreat slightly to the south, thus leaving the road clear for the French to continue their retreat. Napoleon capitalized on this success by garnering as many of his forces as possible, and then retreated from Krasnoi unharried by the Russians. The French rearguard, however, led by Marshal Ney, was still too far to the east to be saved, and was abandoned by Napoleon to its fate. On November 18, the Russians again occupied the road, and then completely destroyed Neys corps in a torrid infantry engagement. Ney himself won renown in this encounter because of his refusal to surrender, escaping into the forest with a handful of survivors.

In the early 18th century the British Army was perhaps at its peak for efficiency, discipline and training. The officers, all from county families automatically took responsibility, gave order, were obeyed. They were the descendants of the Knights and squires who had led at Poitiers and Agincourt Often their men were from their fathers estates or from the same small country town. The men were long service professionals, bound by an iron discipline and loyalty, as were their Officers to their seniors. Read more in the Tradition Magazine No 53
