For three years, carpenters, pit-sawyers, smiths, rope makers, glaziers, sail makers, painters, woodcarvers and other specialists had worked on building the Navy´s new warship- the Vasa.

She was a “royal ship” the seventeenth-century designation for the largest type of naval vessel. Vasa was designed to be the foremost of Sweden`s war-ships, with a hull constructed from one thousand oaks’, 64 large guns, mast more than fifty meters high and many hundred gilded and painted sculptures.

But fate decreed otherwise; the ship foundered shortly after embarking on her maiden voyage in august 10th 1628.

Vasa were salvaged after 333 years on the bottom of Stockholm’s Ström in April 24th 1961 and is now the only preserved seventeenth-century ship. Adorned with more than 700 sculptures, she is also a unique treasury of art.

The Vasa Armament; 64 guns, including 48 24-pounders, eight 3-pounders, two 1-pounders and six mortars.

Vasa Crew; 145 seamen and 300 soldiers (soldiers not on board when Vasa sank).
