The Crimean War October 1853 – February 1856 was a conflict between the Russian Empire and an alliance of the French Empire, the British Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Kingdom of Sardinia. The war was part of a long-running contest between the major European powers for influence over territories of the declining Ottoman Empire. Most of the conflict took place on the Crimean Peninsula.

The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday, 18 June 1815, near Waterloo in present-day Belgium, then part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. The French army under the command of Napoleon was defeated by two of the armies of the Seventh Coalition, an Anglo-allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington, and a Prussian army under the command of Prince Blücher. Napoleon himself summed up Berthier's overall worth as a soldier, and to the Grande Armée in general, referring to his absence at Waterloo, 'If Berthier had been there, I would not have met this misfortune.
